“Best Medical Product/Technology” Award
Goes to Powerheart AED

Compiled by ExtendLife editors from various contributors

Cardiac Science, Inc. has announced that it received the American Electronics Association (AeA) 2002 High Tech Award in the category of "Best Medical Product/Technology" for the new Powerheart® AED (automated external defibrillator). The award was presented on Thursday, May 16.

The Powerheart AED by Cardiac Science signals landmark innovation in public access defibrillation (PAD) technology and usability. Approved by the FDA in February, the Powerheart was designed to be the easiest to use and most technologically advanced AED for the treatment of victims of sudden cardiac arrest (SCA). SCA is the number one killer of Americans, claiming 250,000 lives annually.

The Powerheart incorporates Cardiac Science's RHYTHMx monitor in the resuscitation effort, making the device exceedingly accurate. With the Powerheart, valuable time is saved, as the rescuer no longer must determine whether the victim has a pulse prior to attaching the AED. Additionally, the device can continuously monitor the patient's heart rhythm after he or she has been revived, thereby protecting the victim against occurrence of a subsequent cardiac arrest while en route to a hospital.

Cardiac Science, based in Irvine, California, is the world’s only manufacturer of in-hospital bedside automatic defibrillators. The Powerheart AED, now available to business, industry, schools, churches, and consumers, is the first product to spring from the merger of Cardiac Science and Minneapolis-based Survivalink Corporation.
